I’m often asked how I stay inspired and inside of the creative flow. Even more than this I am asked how I get to this place of creativity. For me, I consider it a huge blessing that most of the time I find myself in the creative flow in the most natural and organic ways – I just end up there. But sometimes, I struggle with getting + staying in the sweet spot of creativity. When I find myself needing to create without ample inspiration, I follow a few steps to get back into the creative flow.
Make some space
I have a studio that has become my most sacred space and nurtures my creativity. With the hustle of each day, the nature of late-night projects and the sheer amount of projects I have going on at one time, things can get out of control in this room. I feel most disconnected from my creative self when I don’t have the space to create in this space I have crafted. I then start from scratch. I get to the bottom of my desk, organize my room and put everything back where it belongs and I start work on one project. Making some space for me to get crafty is a sure-fire way to get
Play some tunes
Music is therapy for me in so many ways. When I am meeting resistance getting into the flow of my projects, I have a go-to tune that I know, if played on repeat, will get me going. Then I have a creative play list I can bounce over too after I feel like I’ve got my creative mojo back. To me, music is therapeutic and healing and there are many different songs I use to nurture my soul + creative side. Take some time and pick the songs that make your soul sing and move you to stay inspired.

Let’s face it. We live in a social-web world full of ideas, conversations and connections. As much as I love being plugged-in, when I am working on projects in my studio I keep strict no-internet zone. This helps me set boundaries and develop a space that I focus solely on the task at hand. I imagine each project I’m working on begin infused with love + light. I enjoy being present with my work and I find this keeps in the creative flow.
Meditate
I often find myself fairly overwhelmed by the go-go-go of the everyday. Switching from one job to another, taking calls, answering texts, remembering to eat. Wherever I am, when I find a few moments, I clear m mind and meditate. To me this looks like an emotional reset. Like when your old phone would freeze and you had to pop the battery out. I make sure I find a couple moments each day to pop out my battery and get back to center. If you aren’t sure where to start, Deepak Chopra has some great tips
Just start
Procrastination has been something I’ve wrestled with my entire life. In the past few years, I seem to be winning the battle because I find that by choosing to wait I’m only making the task or project bigger and heavier and I float father away from being in the flow the more I choose to stay distracted. Once I started following my “just start” rule things became easier. When I say “just start” it doesn’t mean you have to be working on the project you know you need to complete. It means you get to your sacred creation space and just start doing something. Maybe you meditate there or start drawing or journaling. The task isn’t the point, the fact that you are indeed creating something is going to help move you towards your creative flow.
While these steps can help you get to your creative sweet spot they can also help you stay there. What do you do when you are experiencing creative blocks? Do you have a sacred place? If so, what does it look like?
